Dear ,

Welcome to 2013! How was your winter break? Can you believe we can start counting down to summer already! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

shutterstock_101961124.jpgOn Shabbat, January 26th we will be celebrating the Jewish New Year for trees: Tu B’Shvat. The Jewish people hold a lot of respect for trees. Trees know when to bloom and when to hibernate for winter, and around this time in Israel the trees will soon start blooming in preparation for the warmer spring season and eventual harvest.

This month let’s remember to act like a tree; let’s focus on the present of enjoying the freshness of a New Year, while still remembering to prepare for the future. In that way we can best make sure that come spring we’ll be bursting with the delicious fruits of our labors that will benefit all those around us!

Tell us a little about yourself

I’m in Grade 7 at Netivot HaTorah in Thornhill, Ontario Canada. I have an older brother, Daniel and a younger brother and sister, Gavi and Nava. I like to write, sing, act, swim, play basketball, and hang out with my friends.

How did you decide to take on this particular project for Lev LaLev?

IMG_5094.JPGChesed has always been part of my family life. My grandmother, Gittie Edery, is the Jewish chaplain at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. My father, Abe, is involved with a few charities and my mother, Miryam, is always doing chesed like cooking for the elderly or other needy families. When my brother Daniel was Bar Mitzvah last summer, he twinned his Bar Mitzvah with a boy from ALEH; we got to celebrate both Bar Mitzvahs’ at the Kotel with the boy’s family. I guess you can say that with all the chesed around me it was easy to “find” somewhere where I could help out. It meant so much to share what many of us take for granted with someone who really does not have much.

What are your plans for the future, i.e. life after Bat Mitzvah?

IMG_5252.JPGI haven’t thought about my future yet but I’d like to become a lifeguard and I definitely want to study in Israel after I graduate high school.

Please share your advice for a girl looking into doing a Mitzvah Project for her Bat Mitzvah.

I would tell everyone to choose a project that you’re passionate about and make it fun. Remember, we really have so much to be grateful for, it’s easy to share.

January survival tip: Staying focused in the new spring semester

It’s never easy to come back from vacation and confront what feels like tons of schoolwork, projects, and extracurricular demands. But don’t let yourself get lost in the flood; reorganize your school notebooks, tidy up your locker/backpack, make sure you know your class and club schedule, go full steam ahead with excitement about all the new things you can learn this semester, and everything will feel back to normal before you know it!
